When I first moved here and brought him with me I kept him in the house. He meowed constantly and understandably. I finally let him out and he looked at me as he walked out and meowed in a certain kind of way that I took as "goodbye".

my maine coon cat didn't like it when I moved him, he was 13 and had lived at the same place for 10 years,, he snuck out of the house while we were moving in, I looked for him for 3 days non stop and kept checking the old house for over a year he never showed up,
