not really relevant to OP but I've long considered getting into games development considering the absolute shovelware pornogarbage asset flips that make bank on steam.

Yeah that's mostly because major studios take advantage of the fact that lots of fags are willing to compete at much lower than average wages for the prestige or the satisfaction of working on their favorite gaymes. Blizzard and Gearbox are known for it.
I'm more talking about going solo or starting a small team. I don't have any specific ideas but Risk of Rain, Rise to Ruins or Defcon are some good examples of what can be accomplished without the support of a major studio

Edgy games are interesting. Something funny and controversial, that no big company would ever touch. Like Postal 2 or Carmageddon or something.
