He seems to really like those new yorker style people. You're right that a lot of these online magazine arts aren't very complex or technical but they usually focus on some specific imagery or theme that evokes thought or emotion.
Your stuff doesn't really evoke any specific feelings towards anything. Like a trippy horse or a space robot looks cool and I could see some of that in a random article but I feel like the scope of your work isn't wide enough to be used on a mass media basis by a large company unless they had some specific niche they were trying to appeal to.
This stuff is commercially produced to specifically appeal to his customers. He also likely has some experience in the industry and knows what people look for. You should be producing artwork related to current events like corona virus or something with broad appeal like currency or gay rights.
