2020-12-06 at 11:38 PM UTCVHS was the wrong format. BetaMax was king for quality and had potential for higher resolution and were smaller. I forgot the reason why VHS won as being the standard go to format but it was enough to crush their sales. they still however sold the and you could find some larger known films on beta probaly until mid 80s. then it just died out all together.
I have a video transfered to DVD format a few years back from a betacam from 79-80 period of me. some of you saw it. it didn't degregade like a VHS would have just over 10-12 years time. so it shows the Betamax was a much better format and should have been chosen as the official format to hold films on.
Oh, I remember why now. VHS had 2-6 hour mode for recording and Beta had 90 minutes max. but it is because it was a lower compression than VHS. they found people might like that better. having a 2-x amount of hour film on 1 tape instead of 2. -

their own proprietary. the two wont read each other.
also, obviousy a VHS wont go into a Betamax because its too big but the Beta could have gone into a VHS by mistake so they created that pin that comes down to stop it from accidentally sliding into a VHS and getting stuck. since the sensor wouldn't be able to read a command to insta eject
