How do you use a ATM when you have no chip and pin.
Do you just put your card in and it says 'How much you want' etc?

To use an ATM you need a pin number. Even though most American debit cards don't carry those new EMV chips, they all have pins.

They have the chip cards here, but most people still don't use them. At least I don't. At stores you either use a pin, or you show id. If you don't have a pin, then you must show ID (well at least in Miami). If you use your card at a gas pump you need the pin or the card holders zip code.

I live in the midwest US. when I buy stuff at a retail POS, I have to enter my pin if I'm using a debit card, but if I use a credit card, I don't have to enter anything and they never ask for ID. not sure if they are supposed to, but they never do..

Shit..the only place that don't ask me for ID with my credit card purchases are places where I'm a regular. I guess cause here in south Fla there's so much scams happening all the time they got to. It's the cubans fault..lol/

there are signs by the register at some stores here that say that you have to show the actual credit card to the cashier, and the card reader prompts for it, too (says SHOW CARD TO CASHIER), but no one cares, and I have never been asked to see it, nor ever saw anyone asked to show it.

I know what u mean. When I travel anywhere outside of Miami, stores never ask for id with my CC purchases. It's this rotten fuckin city I live in.

Debit cards can also be run as credit through retailer's POS system, in which case it will prompt for an electronic signature. Some stores only require a signature if the purchase made is over 50 USD.
Some locations will ask for the last four digits of the credit card number to ensure that it matches the magnetic strip, to ensure that the card has not been remagnetized with another number.
Some locations now allow you to use Google Pay or Apple Pay, where you just hold your phone up to the card reader whilst the application is open, and it verifies the transaction and sends a digital receipt to the email of the account holder.
Certain locations (small chains or family-owned businesses) will not allow you to use a card of any kind unless the pre-tax total of your purchase is over 5.00, because their credit authorizer charges them a percentile fee (usually about %3) for every credit transaction, and this cuts into the profits of their sales.

On the west coast here. There's some threshold for when you have to enter your PIN. I think it's $50, under that you can just swipe your (debit) card without using a pin and it works. Over that you need a PIN or no dice. For credit cards it's a similar situation, swipe and under whatever amount that's it, and over that you need to sign (although god knows it's not verified so w/e).

also companies are niggers about what they reject. Tried to buy a pipe the other day and two different cards were like "lol nope" before I was like "fuck it, I'll pay cash". Every time I try to buy bitcoin it's a clusterfuck of 2 or 3 or 4 factor authentication.

Yeah, like just a cheapie glass pipe. I bought it at a smoke shop so I guess when they signed up to accept credit cards or whatever they had to put down that they sold "vice goods" or whatever. It's legal to buy a pipe of course, but I guess based on my history of usage it was considered fraud or something dumb like that. Kinda funny considering I paid for booze with the same card the same day, but I guess smoking paraphernalia is a notch above in the minds of credit card companies.
