80 million Americans doxxed in massive breach

Researchers have discovered a worrisome security breach that exposes the data of more than half of U.S. households.
Experts from vpnMentor, a site that analyzes virtual private network services, discovered an exposed database storing the details of some 80 million American households, or up to 65 percent of households nationwide.
The database, hosted on a Microsoft cloud server, includes sensitive information like names, addresses, locations, gender, age, income, home type and marital status, among other data.
Credit card and social security numbers were not listed in the database.
Researchers Ran Locar and Noam Rotem said it's unclear who owns the 24-gigabyte database.
'Unlike previous leaks we've discovered, this time, we have no idea who this database belongs to,' the researchers said.
'It's hosted on a cloud server, which means the IP address associated with it is not necessarily connected to its owner.'
Locar and Rotem warned that this information could help hackers gain access to related accounts, such as email addresses, by using full names included in the database.
The database is still online and isn't password protected.

Nope, in the US a lot of places don't have phone books like that anymore. A lot of addresses are not listed, and can only be found in certain government databases. You can also opt out of having your address listed anywhere in certain states, but a database like this would likely still have it.
White pages are one thing, but I used to enjoy yellow pages. You could find all kinds of bizarre and interesting businesses listed. I found all these weird escort services, and companies selling high order explosives and such. I posted a topic in Bad Ideas on zoklet (or totse?) years ago, which mentioned that. If you were trying to find places to break into with expensive or useful items, the yellow pages were a gold mine. But like white pages, they're dying out. They want to put everything online now so they can track everyone looking anything up. -

Nope what? again your name and address isn't secret info, it's out there somewhere...if not in the phone book it's on the tax/property records, electoral roll, the US mail service...etc etc...it's certainly not "doxing" if the mailman puts your letters in the wrong mailbox lololol. -

Tax records if you own the house. Then you'd have to contact the county tax assessor, or pay a fee online with some database either way. Phone books, no. Unlikely nowadays to be an effective way to get info on this many people. Doxxing someone usually doesn't have a lot to do with social security numbers or credit card numbers. Mostly just identifying information, name/address mostly.

Not normally in this form. So yeah, it is being doxxed. It's being doxxed because of who owns this one. If you wanted to identify someone from the internet and all you had to go on was state or city, this would make it a lot easier. They've tried to obscure this information over the years, making it more difficult as I've pointed out. They used to drop off yellow pages and white pages, updated, for free, on people's door steps. They don't do that here or a lot of other places anymore. This allows people to skip a lot of steps. In the UK for example, if I recall correctly, it's even less "out there" in a readily available form. -
