   with imgur I think it saves videos as both mp4 and gif so you can usually just change the extension

   Yeah, use the video tag for MP4s.
   
   I think I set the embedder to just try throwing the content into a video element if it doesn't look like a recognized hosting service (like youtube) so if you browser will play it you should be able to embed it, just beware stuff like webp may work for your browser but not for other people's.
