When did they start calling eighths "half quarters"?

   I've been buying weed forever and I always asked for eights, eighths, 8balls.
   
   Now that I go to dispensaries they keep correcting me when I say "eighth" they are like do you mean a half quarter and I'm like do you mean three and a half?.
