Im legitimately curious how things would be affected if there was simply no more such thing as pawnshops and payday loans.

my guess is it wouldn't make any difference. some people have good work ethics and some really don't care. also I'd imagine they do their fair amount of business with people caught up in drugs that'll take any amount of money for what they have.

it's been many many moons since I went to any of those kind of places. you end up with way less for the value of what you have. It's difficult enough to be in a desperate situation let alone have to bargain basement something of value because you're injured trying to recover to get back to work.

and payday loans charge an arm, a leg, and then your other leg too. lolz it's better to not even go to them. If money is tight you're just making it even tighter in the long run.

I don't disagree that in essence, they end up taking advantage of people in desperate spots, very similar to payday loans. It's a double edged sword because the person in desperate need for money is either gonna get a little bit of money for a shitty value, or they don't use the pawn shop and get no money at all.

At the end of the day, people are gonna wind up tight on cash for any number of reasons, and there's always gonna be a need for these types of places to exist. So while we can say they're taking advantage of people, those very people know it.

Is it any different than McDonald's taking advantage of people on a tight budget and offering dollar menu trash as if to suggest they're getting a good deal? A person could buy hamburger and make 5x as many burgers on their own but McDonald's does it for you and takes advantage of your laziness. I think that's just..economics.

I understand what you're saying. I only agree in part. I agree with what you're saying about McDonalds. people know what they're getting. but they can go somewhere else.

people in desperate situations know what they're getting too but they're choices are limited (unlike eating at McDonalds) to either take the money or have their lights turned off.

people that run pawnshops know people in desperate situations don't go to pawnshops and get chump change for something of value unless they really need the money or it doesn't matter what they get for it. so they are taking advantage of people in desperate situations. I guess it depends how you want to look at it.

I kinda figured you may know someone with a pawnshop. my intention wasn't to offend your cousin.
