"I grew up in Indiana and I was a good kid until I was 15 and realized there is basically nothing fun to do there except smoke pot and get drunk (or running/sports).
This is epitomized at its 3 main universities (Purdue, IU, Ball State) as well as some of the smaller ones. I grew up in Northern Indiana, but from what I've experienced Southern Indiana isn't AS boring because there are more things to do (outdoorsy kinda things- fish/hunt/caves/lakes) besides get drunk and watch TV. This said, much of Southern Indiana is also a white-trash wasteland demographics/society wise.
The state as a whole is generally conservative, but there are pockets where general backwards "Bible-belt" ideology (social issues/zealotry) is taken to a whole new level, you have to see it to believe it. The Northwest Area near Chicago (Gary/Hammond) is for the most part a ghetto/dump, and there are pockets of predominantly trailer trash areas in Northern/Central Indiana.
Carmel and the suburbs of Indianapolis are most affluent but like I said, the only things to do for fun are get drunk/watch Friday night Football games and if you're rich enough, frequently vacation to places far away from Indiana." -
