   yeah, like IS said, they're not used exclusively for the show - hundreds of thousands is a huge overstatement, though I guess exploitive contractors are endemic in the US and other western states
   
   even if they did cost that much, it's really rather insignificant compared to the money they save on writers, actors etc.

    I almost killed myself with the stuff, it's seriously a psychotic break in a capsule. sure, you might be able to get someone into a suggestible state but it's extremely unpredictable - they're just as likely to explode in cloud of violence
    
    I've actually read a lot about it's use as a 'truth serum' and they came to the same conclusion - people under its influence are completely unpredictable and are just as likely to tell you completely made-up nonsense as they are the truth. I have read some leaked CIA (I think) documents, and apparently it's still used for torture in some cases - it's reported to be agonising if injected into the spinal column

    I've heard the same. the assassinations you mentioned, the way they were carried out - those guys had absolutely no fear of getting caught, and their operations were a lot more sophisticated than were let on at the time.
    
    the media at the time portrayed them as a personality cult, but there was a lot more to it than - they believed they had a 'divine mission' to preserve culture after the world's institutions were destroyed by war (kind of like the Manson cult but with less buzzwords). something in that ideal attracted so many successful, well-educated people - an 'elite group'

    it's really fascinating if you're interested in the psychology of groups or cults - they were similar to Scientology, except a lot more reclusive in terms of membership. The majority of their members were successful people like doctors, lawyers, engineers and celebrities - not the aimless minimum-wage people that are often associated with cults.
    
    They managed to get a lot of their hardware from overstock after the cold war, and some of their number were experienced enough in engineering and manufacturing to get those processes up and running completely independently.
