Originally posted by aldra IRAQ - A coalition airstrike (both US and the IAF are blaming each other for it) killed roughly 300, 130 or so in a single building. It's starting to look like it may have been set up - ISIS became aware of the strike and intentionally concentrated civilian prisoners there, potentially detonating a bomb to coincide with the strikes. Witnesses on the ground report three large VBIED explosions at the site just prior.
IRAQ (MOSUL) - According to several local bloggers this is fast becoming a new favourite tactic. They know they're going to lose Mosul so they're making it as bloody as possible. People who've made it out are reporting that ISIS are intentionally concentrating civilians (they have control over 200k or so people in the city) into areas where they have militia fighters operating - specific reports are of up to 5 families being packed into single residences with sniper and mortar emplacements on the roof.
additionally, live VBIEDs are being left on the streets outside so that the radius of even 'precise' bombing raids are amplified to cause extreme casualties. -

Mr Pesce said the responsibility to educate the public on such tools could fall on librarians, who use search tools as part of their job.

2017-03-27 at 5:34 AM UTC in Conflict ShitpileSyria - After the Syrian S200 missile system absolutely didn't shoot down an Israeli jet, Israel threatened airstrikes against Syrian missile installations should they defend their airspace in the future. Syria has now responded and stated that they will respond to any further incursions into Syrian airspace by dropping TOCHKA SRBMs all over their petrochemical refineries.
As an aside, Yemen's tactic of using $200 drones to force KSA to choose between expending multimillion dollar missiles or having their SAM installations incapacitated is something Israel can expect to have to deal with in the very near future. -

2017-03-27 at 3:04 AM UTC in OTC hydrocodone from codeineare you familiar with glutethimide? Rizzo and I used to talk about it a lot, found synthesis instructions (via patents) but it never really got any further than that.

it's not like they don't have ways around that already -

that's an interesting article. makes me wonder how much I could strip off power bills with a similar setup... though I live in an apartment without a balcony now though so I'm not sure I'd have anywhere to put large solar panels -

sounds about right. that is not a scenario I'd want to experience.

this is a good summary of the scope of things that would fail without power for a prolonged period

Perl at the moment - there are plenty of CPAN libs to do the heavy lifting because I'm only really interested in the fingerprinting logic for this project. I might open a repo or I might just post the code here -

do you live in the US? without electricity, food supplies in cities and heavily populated areas would likely fail within 24 hours, then you have millions of other hungry dongs to contest with.
The DoD wrote an analysis on the potential effects of an attack against the power grid a few years back, prognosis was complete societal breakdown within a few days driven by lack of access to necessities like food and water -

In reality though, I don't really care, and it actually sounds pretty cool.
there's no way I'm the first to have thought of it, so in effect it's likely already being exploited in the way you mention and multiple others.
my end goal in this, I guess, is to get a general idea of how many public commenters are actually genuine and how many are essentially carpet-bombing public opinion
that said, it's likely people engaged in this use measures to randomise the patterns I'd be looking for so I'd have to experiment with different metrics to even hope for success -

if everyone consumed at the same level as the US we'd need something like 4x the total resources housed in the earth, 5x if we're using Saudi Arabia as a benchmark
almost every war since WWII has been an energy war; petrol and gas will not last forever and fighting will become more and more constant and intense as supplies dwindle. at the same time, weapons become more and more powerful and more sophisticated, making catastrophic infrastructure damage more likely.
