Maybe, I have no idea how the actual law around it works, but I wouldn't think they were just flagrantly contravening that directive.

I was actually just thinking about who this affects - would it just be ISPs, or would it also affect the behaviour of companies that own core internet infrastructure, like Google? Disallowing sites from the caching and delivery datacentres they run would force traffic down other routes, likely causing timeouts and other congestion-related issues.

So I'm for the principle, but in practice I can see why it can be viewed as an unreasonable restriction that harms customers and companies alike.

Of course the reason why I think it is good in principle is that companies are dicks and won't always do good things

I think that might be valid because it treats the streaming service separately from your internet service; they can offer a dedicated streaming service as long as it doesn't impact on the core product. The major issue I have with the repeal is that it would allow ISPs to essentially nullroute sites or even just specific URLs out of existence

They should also mandate that all buildings must be built upside down underground so that 9/11 can never happen again

Goddamnit. Especially worrying given the recent expansion of censorship under the guise of 'fighting fake news'.

nah, the channel between Alaska and Russia. It's less than 100km across and anytime Russia flies anywhere near it the US loses it's mind.

So Russia regularly flies bombers around there.

I remember reading something about US nuclear drills; likely something to do with that but I'm not seeing any 'real' news outlets reporting on it.

I'm not so sure - if the US didn't value Turkey militarily I expect they would've done something to stop them from destroying their military assets in the form of the SDF. Turkey is literally bombing the fuck out of them right now - as above, the YPG is withdrawing from the frontlines, leaving Raqqa's western flank open.

In terms of local allegiances, the Gulf states may side with Turkey, but only out of convenience. Israel is likely to provide some support as well given they'll do anything they can get away with to hurt Iran/Hezbullah.

Yeah, agreed. I just wanted to point out the others' contributions because they're so often overlooked.

US - Massive aircraft movements at the moment. Reports on social media of all types of aircraft being launched from various military bases. I just saw reports of a large number of refuelers headed to the West Coast, also bombers launched as far East as Whiteman in Missouri

Originally posted by Discount Whore Really though, who does Turkey have on their side?

NATO, lol. The moment they shot down that Russian fighter they called a NATO meeting even before contacting Russia; it's become obvious that Erdogan is trying to drag NATO into war but most of the alliance is still hesitant.

No way would Russia back Turkey - aside from interests in Syria, Erdogan is totally untrustworthy and even though he halfheartedly apologised for shooting down that jet, there's something of a trade war going on at the moment. I'm not really familiar with the details but I read Turkey's put a ridiculous 200% tariff on grains imported from Russia. That stings especially badly because Russia's in the process of trying to make farming a core part of their economy to diversify from gas exports.

As for Assad, the RUAF really turned the tide of the war and gave Assad much-needed political backing, but the real heavy-lifting on the ground is being done by the SAA, Hezbullah and the IRGA. They're all working in tandem but Hezbullah and the Iranians are the ones making the real sacrifices; dying for someone else's country.

SYRIA - Also large-scale ground engagements between Kurd forces (mostly YPG) and Turkish military across Northern Syria. I don't have any concrete information but some are saying it looks like a prelude to invasion.

As an aside - the west's mantra of 'superiority through air power' has been hammered into the public consciousness since WWII, but against moderately effective (ie. post-cold war hardware, properly trained operators, sensible tactical use) anti-aircraft weapons, they always come off second best.

Against the PANV in Vietnam, the USAF lost almost 10,000 planes - Soviet battle doctrine dictated that (relatively) expensive SAM (Missile) sites be used to close high-altitude airspace, forcing planes to fly low, into the firing range of hidden AAA (AA Guns) emplacements.

Similar tactics were used to great effect in Egypt and Lebanon against Israel to great effect in 1973.

The only reason Israel did so well in 1982 is because the Syrians manning the anti-air installations in Lebanon were absolute mongolroys - they used mobile missile batteries as static emplacements and didn't bother camouflaging them, put radar units in valleys instead of on hills because they didn't want to dig out latrines etc.
