I've had plenty of times that were really fun being homeless, you have to enjoy yourself otherwise emptiness and depression will swallow you. You can eat at least one or two meals everyday. There's 3 places that do daily lunch and it's usually good and there's a spot that does dinner but it's only men because it's a male shelter. They have really good food and you get a can of pop and desert. It's a lot of walking back and forth though. Also there's always people stopping and handing out containers of food. There's a shower house you can use Monday through Friday too. And the free store will give you a decent little homeless bag with different stuff like peanut butter and snacks and stuff. If you hit the free store for a regular monthly visit they give you a real good amount of actual food. After I realized how it really was being homeless I'd have lots of fun if I wasn't dopesick. I only got away because my last couple overdoses were bad and my dude had to give me mouth to mouth after 2 doses of narcan. He said the next one he probably wouldn't be able to bring me back, that stuck with me and made me realize I needed off the streets.

So the concept of meaning itself is an emergent phenomenon that springs forth from our very being. We know we are conscious, therefore we know there must be some concept of meaning.

If we weren't here, there'd be nobody to question the meaning of anything. But here we are.

So meaning only exists because of us. And because we exist, we have meaning.

It's actually a kind of responsibility we have. As far as we know, we humans are the ONLY agents of change, of thought, in the entire universe. In fact, we ARE the universe: we are the product of what happens when you put a bunch of hydrogen and helium in one place for a long time, eventually it starts thinking and that's us. We are the universe itself given form.

So it's our duty to give ourselves meaning, because if we don't do it no one else will. The universe is certainly meaningless without us.

What that meaning is, is up to us to decide. Some people believe there is a god and that's fine, that can be their meaning. But people without gods can have meaning too, we can find meaning in love and community and our accomplishments.

That's kinda what I think of "meaning" in general. I could get more specific but basically I think there is something else other than this, what we experience now. Some continuation. I don't know if that's a personal continuation of each individual, like a soul or something, or just life itself as a whole continuing in some form, forever.

But I think it's going somewhere. It's building to something. And we're part of that.

Maybe eventually we can become gods ourselves and make our own realities. Maybe that's what this is, a crib for gods. But that's a little more speculative.

Bottom line is, you're alive now. You can experience happiness and fulfillment NOW. You can do things that make you proud you did it. You can have fun. You can choose to do whatever you want and make the most of it. And that's not nothing

Originally posted by ner vegas 1. 'mass shootings' are extremely common outside of schools if you don't exclude 'drug or gang related incidents' like most statistics do

it's kinda deceptive because most reporting on mass shootings actually do include gang violence that's like the majority of them. so whenever there's a real mass shooting, which most people consider an indiscriminate random attack by a lone gunman on a soft target, cnn or whoever gets on tv and says 'it's only x month and there's already been 8,000,000 mass shootings'. They don't mention 95% of those are gang related or some other kinda nig dispute at a club or something, and also no one even has to die for it to be called a 'mass shooting' I think it's 3 or more injuries in a single event is the criteria.

So people associate mass shootings in their mind with the kinda event like a school shooting, they don't think that if you just stop gang violence 'mass shootings' would basically evaporate as a statistic.

But that's not as politically convenient because if they admit that then democrats that run most major cities would actually have to do something about street violence, and they'd have to admit gun laws have almost nothing to do with it
