the short of it is this.
France discovered the modern motion camera. America was first in with some gizmos but France won.
In The USA the state of New Jersey and NYC were the first to be filmed in the 1800s with motion picture. then they realized they were limited to scenery and the weather only allowed for filming certain months depending on the scene called for. this is where they up and moved to San Francisco at first for about a decade and then in the 1920s started moving the business to LA. But Oakland East Bay was some of the first film studios before they realized LA would be better. so started moving them down there.
but you can film Desert scenes, Sahara Desert scenes, New England or England or European or The Alps or anything you want in this state. year round. exterior or interior-closed sets. British Columbia is also a great location for film making.
Im too old. and my peen shrank from the meds.
