   typically you won't get enough range for it to be worthwhile. you can get into ham radio and encode TCP/IP data that way but equipment is expensive, complicated and you won't have enough bandwidth to do much more than telnet or a pure text bbs.
   
   also the FCC will probably put both feet in your ass

   I read internet radios had no range limitations so long as there is an internet connection.
   I saw crappy ones on alibaba for $80 USD
   I just want a click to talk walkie to wear around on my belt while I wait for someone to chirp in and say "Hey fuys".

   This might be less interesting if it turns out the only set up is going to be installing the batteries.
   Rabbitweed came up with the idea of messing with HAM radios except they do not have enough range to travel the globe.
   Also, he was probably drunk when we talked about this.
