Tragedy averted: California earth dam reservoir ordered emptied and rebuilt

   I read about this a few days ago on I think Slashdot - all they had was that the reservoir was ordered emptied. It never mentioned why. The reason is simple, cos when you shake an earth dam it subsides, and lets the water over-top, which is catastrophic and winds up the entire dam getting washed away - along with anyone downstream. Rebuilding this dam is a wise move.
