    Operation Timber Sycamore

Timber Sycamore was a classified weapons supply and training program run by the United States Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and supported by some Arab intelligence services, such as the security service in Saudi Arabia. Launched in 2012 or 2013, it supplied money, weaponry and training to rebel forces fighting Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in the Syrian Civil War. According to US officials, the program was run by the CIA's Special Activities Division [6] has trained thousands of rebels.[7][8] President Barack Obama secretly authorized the CIA to begin arming Syria’s embattled rebels in 2013.[9]
The program's existence was suspected after the US Federal Business Opportunities website publicly solicited contract bids to ship tons of weaponry from Eastern Europe to Taşucu, Turkey and Aqaba, Jordan.[10] One unintended consequence of the program has been a flood of US weapons including assault rifles, mortars and rocket-propelled grenades into Middle East's black market.

No, no. Lefties have been saying for years it's a tin foil hat conspiracy.

Not really though. Like the house and Senate funded bills for years that everyone knew about, they just didn't know how counterproductive it was and how Islamist the "moderate rebels" were so posting a Wikipedia entry means absolutely nothing and at the age of 93 you should know that is not a source

the funniest thing about the train/supply program was that it became obvious that the rebels they were training were just taking their training and weapons and transferring them to Al-Nusra and ISIS. so what did the pentagon do? change it to just a supply program and give them even more weapons.

Purple Shovel and the diplomatic carriage fiasco piping weapons from Eastern Europe to Syria was far more damning. There were arms factories in the Ukraine that actually had to hire up to 10x their current staff to keep up with demand

It's funny that the only country that hasn't stoked the Islamist militant movement (besides standing idly by as Syria allowed IS to grow giving them a pretext for airstrikes) is Russia. They've been fighting terrorism and Saudi influence for years and years and Chechens are basically boss terrorists. 10 Syrians=1 Chechen if not more

The ironic part is that ISIS is a creation of the CIA, in partnership with several other world governments.

Chechens were the most effective 'rebel' and ISIS battle groups in Syria. It was a Chechen sniper unit that kept the SDF out of Raqqa until the US said 'fuck it' and turned the entire city into rubble and UXO.

That might've actually been the Dzukar Dudayev (I don't know spelling) battalion... Who later moved to the Ukraine and now serve as the Kiev-2 Volunteer Battalion.

sounds like they their ideology is just hating Russia which makes sense since the guy they're named after hated Russia and was killed by them. I think whoever is fighting against them is probably on the right side of history

They're holdovers from the Russian-Checheneyan wars, the hard Islamist factions who were initially sponsored by the Gulf states but mostly Turkey. Most of them are ex-regular military.

As for who sponsors them in Syria, they mostly joined ISIS so the usual suspects - Gulf states and US 'black budget'. They largely paid their own way to get there and joined up for the purpose of getting arms and funneling them back to Chechenya in order to start fighting Russia again.
