   There is no witness to conscious experiences. Conscious experiences are conscious in and of themselves. The fact that they are structured by our brains into one structure that believes it is a person is what causes the illusion of the witness, because it is an attempt to preserve the self.

   It's a thing as an illusion. The simple fact is that there is no reason to believe that consciousness needs an experiencer. An experience simply happens.
