I find Max Tegmark's mathematical universe idea to be very interesting.
Basically, his idea is that the universe is simply an abstract object, like a platonic object, like the number 3 or the mathematical object the cube. Similarly the universe is simply some kind of complex mathematical construct that exists by logical necessity. All of the complexity of our universe, including the emergence of our consciousness, is just a mathematical pattern within that.
