Why is this not a thing? There are literally no downsides.
Even if you bring in the "mentally unsound" or "coerced into it" arguments, this could be solved by having a 2 (or more) year waiting list, and who are they to judge if people are "mentally unsound" anyway? And what about people that are mentally unsound but will continue to be for the rest of their lives, who will either continue to get worse or kill themselves (or others!) anyway when their organs could've been used to save lives?
People are going to commit suicide anyway, and 20 people that want to live die every day on the organ waiting list

I agree.
Also, if I get the opportunity to have my brain transplanted onto someone or something else, I'm gonna take that opportunity.
This has something to do with my beliefs as to what happens to your consciousness when you die, and I believe probably the best chances there are to give your consciousness atoms a shot to keep going is to be consumed by another person or animal, or to have your brain transplanted into basically a pickle jar of embalming fluid.

I don’t think they can transplant anything neurological yet. Too much electricity running through that shit.

How about loan4 your organs? You can get monies 4 your organs up front?.. take that vacation you always wanted..then you go 'home". Like S0lent Green

Consciousness surviving is one of my current pipe dreams, it would not really be a suicide in that situation.
I got a new license when I moved recently and apparently they transferred my donor status without asking me if I still wanted to be one or not. I use to be pretty gung ho on it "Like, what kind of asshole would say NO?". But recently? I/m really unsure as to whether I wanna be one myself or not.

Regardless of my current feelings though, what downside could there possibly be to this though?

it'd be pretty dangerous. it's one thing for a person to make their wishes clear to family and friends to come to an understanding with the doctor, but what's to stop an unscrupulous doctor from harvesting people without a 'support network' - vagrants, orphans etc. - and manufacturing consent after the fact?
it's not like consent isn't already manufactured in plenty of industries including medical already, but this would raise the stakes dramatically.

In some countries I believe you can sell one of your kidneys legally, but this doesn't necessarily ease the extortion involved with the pressuring of people to sell or give up their organ for a vicious suitor. Also, this puts added pressure on people whose family members urge them to sell their kidney to help pay off their debt, because they can do so without legal retribution. Removing this option lessens the pressure as they can use the excuse "It's illegal, I could go to jail".
I was looking this up a couple days ago for some reason.

Assisted suicide will never be legal. Here is my reasoning, suicide is a personal freedom and a public health issue just like illegal drugs.
Legalizing drugs would reduce deaths and overdoses and that will likely never happen in our lifetime so assisted suicide is going to take as long. You are not allowed personal freedoms that affect public health. You can be locked up for threatning to kill yourself.
