That's when the attacker directs a firehose of traffic at the ISP which is hosting the server, in such a way that no matter what the system administrator does on the server, he will still be exceeding his maximum throughput, causing major timeouts for users on the server.

    Had a couple of outages yesterday, so the exact cause depends on which of them you experienced. Essentially though the server is really dinky while server load has been going up for various reasons so that was responsible for the original issue, the subsequent shorter outages were part of troubleshooting and some performance tweaks. The long term solution is I need to spin the DB off onto its own VM and upgrade the webserver, but that's going to require some downtime and a little planning. For the time being I have a workaround that seems to be working pretty well.
