NAS options (good and cheap only plz)

Personal stuff NOT A PORN COLLECTION so it doesn't need to be very large.
1 TB is honestly probably way too much for my needs.
That being said give me something good and cheap.

Find a DVR, usually around $6-$8.
Look up the model on your phone and ensure it's got a 1TB drive in it.
If not look up the other ones.
Buy said DVR for $6 or $8.
Take it home, open it, pull out the 1TB drive, format it and there you go.
I have a stack of about 20 just from doing this. -

Fully utilized, to the point I need to find a few more.
1tb drive only holds 3 256gb raspberry pi images and I have a crap load of those.
There there are backup drives of the multiple computers I have laying around
retro rom collections..terabytes of data there.
and of course YOUR MOMS NOOOOODS.
ETA: I would also like to transfer my 20+yr collection of torrented movies/tv stuff from the 2000 DVDs they currently reside on at some point though the time to do that is probably longer than my life expectancy. -

backing up dvd is a daunting task. i have like 500+ dvds but most of them have their pirated counterpart as torrents somewhwre.
i used to do the opposite by burning all my torrented files into dvds. those were the days when terabytes hdds were unheard of.
anyway its silly to put all yiur data into one big nest, especially when their used with unknown history and reliability. -

Back in the old days I used to back up my warez to zipdisks...100mb per disk, fucking lollocks. Once CD burners became affordable I got one of those and sold all my zipdrives to a nerd at Compaq, I recall I had about 160 of the fuckers and sold them for like $4 each...I guess he was backing up his warez too and still hadn't bought a CD burner..the peasant. -

do you use all your rapesberry pi images frequently or are you just hoarding them for some ideal, unspecified time in the future where you will have dire needs for them. -

I sell ready to go Raspberry PI setups as part of my side hussles...I usually offer the buyer a choice of images...are they PS1 heavy? Sega Saturn heavy? MAME heavy? etc.

Not a great deal, I might sell a setup for $150 and the parts and labor might add up to $100-$120... but all the side hustles add up to a vast fortune.
I mean it's not a lot of work to burn an image to a variable size SD card (cheap from microcenter) and stick a Pi4 in a $5 case etc...and throw in a cheapo mini wireless USB keyboard/mouse/gamepad etc. Maybe $110 or so for a full 256 jiggawhat setup.
The longest part is burning the image and you can put everything else together while doing that and then take a power nap. -

Doesn't take 2hrs..maybe 15mins...it's not like it's a love making session or anything.
But yes a labor of love, I love to see the joy on a 40yr old mans face when he gets to play Streets of Rage II again after all those lost years of adulthood. -

With my abundance of computers laying around I have decided to invest in a ssd and just turn one of my other computers into a dump for all the shit I don't want to lose.
Now the question is, what is a decent OS to use for such a feat?
